Somerset County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program
The Somerset County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program gives residents and farmers a legal and cost-free way to dispose of unwanted household items that cannot be disposed of in the regular trash. This drop-off opportunity is for residents only.
Five events are held annually at various locations around the county from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to enable residents to take advantage of the program. Proof of Somerset County residency is required; (current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address). Pre-registration is not required. No businesses allowed. Adherence to social distancing guidelines is required. Residents must wear gloves and facial coverings, stay in their vehicles with the windows rolled up and store hazardous materials in trunks, cargo areas or truck beds.
Household hazardous waste includes banned or outdated pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, motor oil (2-gallon maximum), used oil filters, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lights, ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, mercury switches, mercury, fire extinguishers, used cooking oil, oil-based paints, pool chemicals, barbecue propane tanks and rechargeable and button-cell batteries.
No tires, electronic waste (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas cylinders, smoke alarms, unknown or unidentified material, 55 gallon drums, dioxins, PCBs, carbon monoxide detectors, explosives, air conditioners, dehumidifiers or any items that contain a refrigerant, Pentachlorophenol and 2, 4, 5-TP (Silvex), are accepted. No commercial vehicles are allowed.

Free Document Shredding for Residents to Help Save Time and Protect Against Identity Theft
Branchburg Municipal Building, located at 1077 US Highway 202 N., Branchburg, NJ 08876 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or until the trucks are filled. The event is a free and easy way for residents to help guard against identity theft, and to avoid the hassle of shredding documents at home. Residents can watch to ensure their documents are completely shredded. The event will occur rain or shine.
To comply with social distancing guidelines, residents must wear facial coverings and should be prepared to unload their items, but staff will be available to help if necessary.
Proof of residency is required: Residents should be prepared to present a current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill with a Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. Businesses and commercial vehicles are NOT allowed.
Residents can bring up to six boxes, containers or bags of documents per visit, but residents will be required to take back their receptacles. Staples and paperclips do not have to be removed. Junk mail, magazines and newspapers WILL NOT be accepted.

Leaves are to be put in Leaf Bio-degradable bags and placed at the curb for pick up on the appropriate day. No plastic bags or they will not be picked up.
Hillsborough – The Somerset County Electronic Waste Drop-off event will occur on Oct. 3, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the South County Public Works Garage, located at 410 Roycefield Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844.
Social distancing is required: Residents must wear facial coverings. Occupants should remain in their vehicles with the windows shut until otherwise directed. Residents will also be expected to remove and place items without assistance, but as instructed by the staff.
Proof of residency is required: Residents must have a current driver’s license, valid lease, tax bill or any other bill that shows proof of their Somerset County address. Pre-registration is not required. No businesses or commercial vehicles are allowed.
Batteries are not accepted: Residents can recycle household hazardous waste including lithium and rechargeable batteries at scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events. Batteries such as AA, AAA, D, C and 9-volt can be disposed of in the regular trash.
